This lei design is not the same as the indigenous ʻilima (Sida Fallax) that Hawaiians have been using for centuries. The Lantern ʻIlima or Royal ‘ilima ( also known as Abutilon pictum, Chinese lantern or Indian mallow) in this design, was introduced to the islands. The bell shaped flower is bigger and sturdier, with beautiful gold, orange, and red colors. In this set, you will have 4 versions of Lei ‘Ilima. In version 1, the flowers are strung kui style but sideways and double the flowers which makes a thicker lei and allows one to appreciate the beauty of the flower. In the other versions, the flowers are strung kui style (end-to-end) on a single strand. Each plant/flower has a different shade to make unique leis.
